Welcome to "On The Beat."

In this area we plan to post some of the more interesting aspects of police work. Frightening, interesting, ridiculous, or downright bizarre calls come in daily, but only a few will be posted here since the time it takes to digitize the recordings and post them can be overwhelming. When audio or visual recordings are available they will be accompanied by a short synopsis of the event. All of the information posted here is publicly available but specifically identifying information has been removed. These incidents are from Menasha or the surrounding area and are taken from dispatch tapes, squad cameras, or evidentiary photos. Please take some time to check out a few of these incidents. We're hoping you can appreciate the challenges involved in contemporary policing!

This incident involved a man distraught about receiving divorce papers. He called his soon to be ex-wife and threatened to commit suicide in front of her. Information obtained from witnesses suggested he had obtained a 20 gauge shotgun and had recently purchased ammunition for the gun. The subject contacted relatives and made comments that could be construed as a final goodbye. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to locate the man. He showed up in front of the residence where his ex-wife was staying. She called 911. When officers arrived on the scene the man fled in his vehicle with officers in pursuit. He came back to the residence and exited his vehicle brandishing his shotgun. Officers attempted to negotiate with him but he again fled in his vehicle. After a few minutes of driving around Menasha, the man stopped again at his ex's location. By this time they were able to exit the house and move to the police station. A short standoff ensued but the man eventually gave up peacefully and was taken to the hospital. The subject was charged with numerous offenses but plead no contest to 2 nd Degree recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to 4 years of probation and a possibility of 1 year in jail (withheld) by Judge Hawley. He was also ordered to pay $500 restitution to the victim in this case along with an apology letter to the officers involved.

This incident provides another example of how terrifying domestic violence can be. A woman called 911 after her husband choked her and threw her into a wall. Before officers arrived he battered her again possibly choking her unconscious after hanging up the phone. He was fleeing the scene as officers were pulling up. The man led officers on a car chase through Menasha and into Neenah at speeds up to 80 MPH in evening time traffic. The man avoided attempts to lay spike strips in front of him until a resourceful Neenah officer hid in front of other traffic and waited for the subject to get close enough where he couldn't avoid the spikes. Shortly thereafter the man gave up. He was charged with eluding, battery, and disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to 2 years in prison with 1 year of extended supervision (imposed and stayed), 9 months in local jail (imposed and stayed), and restitution for $398 to the City of Neenah . The Menasha squad cars needed new brakes.

This is a vehicle pursuit initiated by the Appleton Police Department that traveled through the City of Menasha . Officers didn't know it until after the chase ended but the car is alleged to have been stolen by the 14 year driver. During the pursuit he rammed a squad car in order to continue fleeing. When he exited the vehicle the driver left the car in gear. One occupant had their foot run over by the still rolling car. Further property damage was avoided by the quick and agile actions of a Calumet County Deputy who caught up to the subject vehicle and stopped it. The deputy was able to reach inside the car while running next to it and throw it into park.

Drunk drivers cause untold destruction upon our highways. This squad camera video is the response to an alleged drunk driving accident on Hwy 10 over Midway Rd. Witnesses reported the man driving recklessly just before the multiple rollover accident. He was ejected during the crash but crawled back into the vehicle to check on the passenger who was unconscious but still belted in the car. Alert citizens utilized a fire extinguisher to knock down the flames of the upturned car just as the first officer arrived. Since the car was still smoldering both occupants were assisted in getting out of the car by ambulance, fire, and police personnel.
