CRT

The City of Menasha Police Department maintains a Crisis Rescue Team (CRT) to serve exceptional warrants and to respond to critical incidents involving barricaded individuals, hostages and /or armed subjects. The CRT consists of 9 officers who have received specialized training to deal with these types of situations as a team. The team continues to train on a monthly basis to maintain proficiency in their team tactics. This training has proven to be invaluable in successfully bringing various incidents to a safe conclusion for the citizens of Menasha.

The City of Menasha Police Department CRT has been activated over the last several years to deal with barricaded subjects and to serve high risk warrants.

In 2007 the team has been activated four times to execute various search warrants. These warrants have been served on addresses within the City of Menasha . Two of the warrants have been served at drug houses or apartments in which weapons have been displayed in the past. One of the drug warrant locations also included a possible homicide suspect from another jurisdiction. The other search warrants dealt with taking into custody or gaining evidence from a shooting suspect and an armed robbery suspect. In all of these situations there were no injuries to officers from subjects in the residences and no injuries to the suspects themselves. The trend in needing a specialized team for these situations continues to rise. The team has doubled the amount of incidents from 2006 in the first 5 months of this year.

While specialized warrant service has been the primary usage for the team in the past few years, the team is also activated to deal with subjects that are a danger to themselves or others and refuse to comply with patrol officers' attempts to assist them. One example is dealing with a subject who had threatened to burn down a residence. The subject had barricaded the windows and doors with 2x4s. After numerous attempts to persuade the subject to come out were unsuccessful, team members were able to use a door ram to open the front door. Contact was made with the subject and he was peaceably taken into custody.
