The Menasha Police Department has One full time Officer dedicated to Crime Reduction.
The Crime Reduction Coordinator works with other Menasha Officers, officers
from other police agencies, and a large group of community volunteers to bring
Crime prevention Programs into the community.
Feel free to explore the links to the left to see the programs we are using
to reduce crime in the community.
Every 15 Minutes
On April 15 +16, 2004 the Menasha Police Department organized
a drunk driving prevention program called “Every 15 Minutes”. The “Every 15
Minutes” program personalizes a drunk driving fatality to demonstrate how many
people are affected by such an incident. On the first day; a predetermined group
of students is selected to serve as a statistical portrait of how many people
are killed in alcohol related automobile fatalities during a typical school
day. Then, the student body is assembled to view a mock crash scene. Mock emergency
services are rendered. After the crash scene, the pre-selected student participants
follow through a course of events which would occur for the role they are playing.
For example, the drunk driver is arrested by a Menasha Police Officer and will
be photographed and processed like a drunk driver. The entire process was videotaped
and overnight Police School Liaison Officer Oleszak produced an 18 minute video
synopsis of the event.
The junior and senior student body was reassembled the next
morning and we showed the videotape that was made overnight. After the mock
scenario is presented, we heard from a guest speaker who shared her daughter's
story and explained how it affected her personally. This program was made possible
by a cooperative effort of both public and private emergency services in the
City of Menasha and financially by a $2,540.00 grant from the John Strange Fund
within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Inc. and donations
from Watter's Plumbing and Franzoi and Franzoi Attorneys at Law. In kind donations
of service and supplies included Menasha Police Department,
Menasha Auxiliary Police, Menasha Street and Sanitation Crew,
Menasha Park and Recreation Department, Menasha Utilities, Menasha High School,
Fox Valley Victim Crisis Response Team, Laemmrich Funeral Home, Theda Star Air
Medical, Theda Clark Trauma Unit, Gold Cross Ambulance, Neenah-Menasha Fire
Rescue, Judge Gritton Circuit Court Branch 1,Winnebago County District Attorney's
Office, Public Defender's Office, Winnebago County Coroner's Office, Bergstrom
Automotive, Jahnke Auto Salvage, Kimberly Clark Corporation, and Winnebago County
Sheriff's Department. Special Thanks to everyone involved! The feedback we received
from the students on this program was excellent. We heard stories that students
who never wore seatbelts began buckling up, some students refused to even attend
an after prom party, and one girl spent two hours and 5 trips driving home friends
who had been drinking during one after Prom party. To view the program in its
entirety contact the Menasha Public Library and ask for the Every 15 Minutes
DVD. We plan our next event for Spring 2006 and are currently seeking funding.
