Park Laborer


This is a manual labor position responsible for all aspects of the maintenance and operations of the Department of Parks, Forestry, and Cemeteries. Primary duties include a variety of manual and semi-skilled park, forestry and cemetery maintenance tasks and related work.


Minimum Requirements/Qualifications of Position:

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one to three years work experience in park maintenance, arboriculture, horticulture, or related comparable landscape / grounds keeping setting.

Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment including but not limited to: mowers, sweepers, pickup trucks, tractors, snow plows, chain saws, and other power tools.

Ability to operate construction equipment including but limited to: backhoe, dump truck, skid steer and front end loaders.

Working knowledge of the practices and principles of Park maintenance including but not limited to turf care, cleaning of shelter and restrooms, athletic facilities, and playground equipment.

Working knowledge of the practices and principles of construction including but not limited to carpentry, masonry/hardscape.

Working knowledge of the practices and principles of Arboriculture/Forestry including but not limited to tree identification, planting, and pruning procedures.

Have, or be able to obtain within three months of the date of hire, a valid Wisconsin CDL Class B Commercial Driver's License with the N endorsement and good driving record which meets the legal and medical requirements of the CDL.


Starting rate is $19.11 per hour with advancement to $23.88, with an excellent fringe benefit package. Selected applicant must be willing to establish permanent residence within 20 miles of the nearest city limit.

Summer Park and Recreation:

Summer Recreation Positions

Recreation - Playground leaders, instructors for gymnastics, baseball, and tennis. Specific activity experience and First-aid and CPR certification is desirable. Hours vary by position and are part-time. Mostly a Mon-Thurs. work week and may include morning, afternoon or evening hours. Occasional weekend and other special event duties are required. Head leader positions may be available in the activities listed above.

Adult Softball – Slow-pitch umpires and scorekeepers needed. Leagues held on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings. Reliability is an absolute requirement. Minimum age for scorekeepers is 15. Approximately 6-12 hours per week.

Park Laborer

Parks - Park Laborers must be 18 years of age or older (perform a variety of park maintenance duties such as mowing, string trimming, litter control, cleaning restrooms/shelters, ball diamond prep, etc.). Valid driver's license required. Hours are typically 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. daily.

Assistant Manager-Pool First Aid and PRO-CPR certification required prior to employment. Experience supervising young adults and prior pool work experience and lifeguard training preferred. Potential for more than one opening. A working knowledge of Red Cross swim lesson program is beneficial. Flexible work schedule.


Swimming Pool Water Safety Instructors (WSI), Certified Lifeguards, Attendants and Concession workers. First-aid and Pro-CPR Certification required prior to work. WSI class reimbursement available. Hours per week vary by position. Pool is open for public swim daily from 1:00-8:00 p.m. When in session, lessons are from 9:25 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
